Mitigating the exposed node problem in IEEE 802.11 ad hoc networks

چکیده
We describe enhancements to the IEEE 802.11 DCF MAC Protocol which enable nodes to identify themselves as exposed nodes and to opportunistically schedule concurrent transmissions whenever possible, thereby improving utilization and mitigating the exposed node problem. The algorithm makes minimal changes to the IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol. It does not require the introduction of new frame types or changes to existing frame formats. We show, using simulations in GloMoSim, that it provides significant improvement in throughput.

A Hidden Node Aware Network Allocation Vector Management System for Multi-hop Wireless Ad hoc Networks
Many performance evaluations for IEEE 802.11distributed coordination function (DCF) have been previouslyreported in the literature. Some of them have clearly indicatedthat 802.11 MAC protocol has poor performance in multi-hopwireless ad hoc networks due to exposed and hidden nodeproblems. Although RTS/CTS transmission scheme mitigatesthese phenomena, it has not been successful in thoroughlyomit...
متن کاملImproving QoS and security in wireless ad hoc networks by mitigating the impact of selfish behaviors: a game-theoretic approach
Selfish users are known to be a severe security threat for wireless ad-hoc networks. In particular, they can exploit mechanisms designed to assure QoS in the network. In this paper the problem of backoff misbehavior in IEEE 802.11 EDCA networks is studied using a game-theoretic approach. First, it is shown how this selfish behavior can disrupt traffic differentiation. Then, a solution is propos...
متن کاملPerformance analysis of IEEE 802.11 ad hoc networks in the presence of exposed terminals
The paper evaluates the performance effects of exposed terminals in IEEE 802.11 ad hoc networks in finite load conditions. It derives analytical models for the estimation of channel utilization and media access delay for IEEE 802.11 ad hoc networks in finite load conditions with and without exposed terminals. The simulation results show that the analytical estimated channel utilization and medi...
متن کاملAsymmetric RTS/CTS for Exposed Node Reduction in IEEE 802.11 Ad Hoc Networks
One interesting problem regarding wireless local area network (WLAN) ad-hoc networks is the effective mitigation of hidden nodes. The WLAN standard IEEE 802.11 provides request to send/clear to send (RTS/CTS) as mitigation for the hidden node problem; however, this causes the exposed node problem. The first 802.11 standard provided only two transmission rates, 1 and 2 Mbps, and control frames, ...
